Flames Fire from Fire place

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Fire & Smoke Odors

Smoke from under door Fires leave odors Call SERVPRO North Central San Antonio at 210-899-1017

Do you recently experience a fire or smoke damage in your home?  What do you do now?  How will you ever get rid of that smell?  OZONING!  What is ozoning and how does it work? Normal oxygen (O2) is converted to O3, which is commonly called ozone.  It reverts back to O2 in about an hour if the O3 is unused.  This leaves the air fresh and clean because the source of the odor has been removed.  There are no artificial odors so the space becomes free of odors, as nature intended. Outdoors, nature eliminates odors using UV light and O3.  Indoors, most places receive very little UV light or O3 to help eliminate the odors.  An ozone machine creates O3, or ozone, in a process that utilizes an electrical current.  Ozone sanitizes the air by breaking down odors and microorganisms at their source. Nature creates O3 as a natural cleaning during thunderstorms, and also from the sunlight striking the earth’s atmosphere.  We have all taken a walk after a thunderstorm and experienced that clean, fresh smell in the air.  That’s O3, or ozone, at work. SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio also offers a service at our facility where we can ozone specific items like clothing, furniture, or anything that has smoke damage and get it smelling like new again.  Call SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio today 210-899-1017

San Antonio Homes or Landmarks – SERVPRO Helps After Fire Losses

Soot Damaged Room Soot Damage Room in San Antonio

We Have Effective Fire Restoration and Mitigation Solutions for San Antonio Properties

Fire restoration combines multiple actions and approaches suitable for protecting and preserving impacted properties. Even with substantial fire loss effects, we have mitigation and restoration strategies to overcome surface damage in properties of all sizes.

Low-Abrasion Soot Cleanup

Removing soot is one of the most critical stages of fire restoration for San Antonio homes and businesses. Prolonged exposure can allow acidic and oily smoke residues to stain and mar the underlying host material permanently. We have many dry solvents and non-abrasive cleaning techniques to remove thick soil deposits without impacting the structure underneath them.

Non-Invasive Odor Removal

While many of the protected structures throughout the city and its surrounding areas are made of stones and other sturdy components, this does not make them or modern homes able to avoid the impact of harsh odors after combustion entirely. Counteracting this damage is the initial effort of our SERVPRO team, utilizing thermal foggers and cleaning products to reduce the harsh combustion malodors left behind. These approaches can be gentle on even aging construction, resulting in less formidable odor obstacles for our deodorization equipment.

Skilled Reconstruction Services

Structures are often damaged to the point of needing repair and replacement after a fire. When considering the destructive nature of soot, smoke and combustion, our general contractor license becomes invaluable to complete several types of repairs and build-back services. Some of the everyday needs of fire-damaged properties after a disaster are:

  • Utility Repair
  • Building Material Replacement
  • Controlled Demolition

With a rich history known beyond the borders of Texas, San Antonio is full of historic and protected properties and homes for more than 1.5 million residents. SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio can help with fast and efficient service when fires threaten these structures. Call today at (210) 899-1017

Every fire damage event is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” fire damage emergency.

Step 1: Emergency Contact

The restoration process begins when you call the local SERVPRO, whose phones are answered 24 hours a day. Our representative will ask a series of questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us arrive with appropriate equipment and resources.

Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment

Our Professionals will carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.

Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.

Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. They will then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.

Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces

SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio uses specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing

They will clean all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. They use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. They’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio can help you through it all. There is no job too big or small. Call us today if you have any questions or need help getting your home back to preloss condition.

What To Expect From Fire Restoration Services

Steps To The Fire Damage Restoration Process

A fire in your home or place of business is going to leave quite a bit of damage behind. Not only do you need fire damage restoration but also water damage mitigation. Here is what the fire restoration process is likely to entail when SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio arrives.

Assessment

The first thing technicians are likely to do is survey the damage. They inspect the whole property to find anything that needs restoration:

  • Walls and insulation
  • Ceilings
  • Flooring
  • Furniture
  • Contents
  • Cabinets / Countertops and more...

Once they have an itemized list of everything that needs to be done, the cleanup can begin. Our SERVPRO staff is able to help with the insurance process in getting the claim filed and approvals that may be required.

Water Remediation

A lot of water goes into putting out a fire. Therefore, Fire damage restoration often starts with water remediation. Technicians also have to contend with the water the fire rescue team used to douse the flames. Restoring what the water destroys is part of the cleanup process.

Smoke and Soot Removal

Another aspect of fire restoration is smoke and soot. Technicians have techniques for removing soot from the cracks and crevices for a complete cleaning. Smoke will likely need to be removed from surfaces, and the air may need to be filtered to neutralize smoke particles in it.

Rebuilding

After all damaged materials have been removed and all remaining surfaces cleaned, the final restoration begins. Walls that are torn out need to be rebuilt. Ceiling and floor tiles that are broken or damaged must be replaced. If the fire only affected one area, it must be made to match the surrounding area so that your home or business looks the same as it did before the fire.
There are several steps to the fire damage restoration process. Knowing what to expect before it begins can help you stay on track.

Flames If you have fire / smoke damage call your experts at SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio we are AWAYS here to help!

Fire and smoke damage can be devastating, and most people don’t know what their options are when disaster strikes. We want to arm you with knowledge so if you ever are the victim of a fire, you’ll know what to do, and what not to do, until help arrives.

DO:

  • Keep your hands clean! Soot on your hands can further soil your items, walls, and woodwork.
  • Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If your electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor.
  • Wipe soot from chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant.
  • If heat is off in the winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilets bowls, holding tanks and tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures.
  • Change HVAC filter, but leave system off until a trained professional can check the system.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of HVAC systems.
  • Ask your insurance adjuster about us. We’re faster to any size disaster!

DON’T:

  • Attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces.
  • Attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture without first consulting us.

  • Consume any food or beverages that may have been stored close to fire, heat, or water because they might have been contaminated.
  • Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. Wiring may be wet or damaged and cause electrical shock, and air movement may create secondary damage.
  • Send garments to the dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set in smoke odor.

These emergency tips will assist you in taking the proper action until our SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio Professionals can arrive. Please follow these dos and don’ts to help reduce damage and increase the changes of a successful restoration "Like it never even happened."

Prevent a Dryer Fire

5/13/2021 (Permalink)

Damaged Dryer due to Fire Burnt dryer from recent fire in Olmos Park Home.

Dryer fires are a serious issue that causes thousands of fires in the US each year.  Clogged vents can easily cause the lint buildup to ignite and quickly spread to the surrounding areas.  The homeowner in the attached photo was extremely lucky that the buildup behind the dryer ignited but the fire did not spread to the surrounding material causing a structure fire.

Dirty or clogged dryer vents and ductwork reduce your dryer’s performance and efficiency.  However, the buildup of heat, dryer lint, and dust can lead to a fire hazard. It is recommended that dryer ducts and vents be cleaned annually to keep your units running efficiently and safely.

If you have not cleaned your ducts/vents recently, and especially if you are experiencing any of the following warning signs, call SERVPRO North Central San Antonio today at: (210) 899-1017

Grab the Fire Extinguisher

4/26/2021 (Permalink)

Different Types of Fire Extinguishers The different types of fire extinguishers

One of the most obvious things you can do to limit fire damage is to extinguish the fire quickly.  However, some of the most common causes of residential fires are Cooking (48%), Heating appliances (14%), and Electrical malfunctions (14%), and these are not safely or effectively extinguished with water.

As a homeowner, you do not want to spray water on an electrical outlet due to the risk of electrical shock.  YOU NEED TO HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER IN YOUR HOME!

Fire extinguishers come in a variety of types based on the classification of fire they are designed to extinguish.  For home use you should have a class ABC extinguisher which means is can extinguish class A fires (solid materials like wood), class B fires (liquids like gasoline or oil), and class C fires (electrical equipment).

Most towns require at least 1 extinguisher under the kitchen sink in order to obtain a certificate of occupancy to sell a home but these tend to disappear over time.  Personally, I keep one under the sink, one on the wall in the laundry room, and one in the garage.  At least maintain the class ABC extinguisher under your kitchen sink at a minimum.

How to Winterize your home, prevent and prepare for a fire

12/2/2020 (Permalink)

As the year is coming to an end, we often encounter more and more days and months with dropping temperatures. We are never fully prepared for a freeze/cold front that comes in overnight. During the winter months we often see a rise in home fires. Here at SERVPRO we are always prepared for any form of natural disaster and are ready to help you at any time of the day!

Here are some precautions we should always think about during these times;

  • Make sure there is a 3ft clearance around fires, space heaters and floor furnaces from combustible and loose flammable materials
  • Do NOT plug in space heaters into a power strip or an extension cord.
  •  Inspect all of the device for any breakage, damage, loose connections and frayed cords.
  • Keep out of high traffic areas including doorways, and areas where kids and pets play and can easily knock over
  • Check all Smoke detectors to ensure they are working and safe

What are combustible materials?

Combustible materials are anything that is flammable and will burn including but not limited to; curtains, paper, clothes, furniture, chemicals, mattresses and bedding

Combustible items are made of many different materials that will ignite, burning and releasing flammable vapors which can cause the fire to spread in a quicker timed manner to the surrounding materials.

Preparing the family in case of a fire

We should always show the kids and family what to do in case of an emergency such as a fire. Teaching kids and family what a smoke detector sounds like and what to do when it is going off. If they smell something burning to report it to an adult, if they see a fire to yell FIRE!  Make sure they know the differences between noises of the smoke detector and the doorbell and any other alarm that goes off in the home.

Teach kids what to do in the next few steps and showing them an escape plan. For them not to worry about their belongings and make sure they know a safe spot, a neighbor’s house, a special location. To call 9-1-1 immediately and report the fire. Teaching kids where a fire extinguishers are in the home. Always teach kids that the smoke will rise and that if you crawl on the floor it will be clearer, if trapped in a room test to see if the door knob is too hot with the back of your hand, if trapped in a room open a window and block the smoke from coming in through cracks. If anyone were to catch on fire by clothing, hair or in any other way make sure they know the drill to stop, drop and roll.

And always have a Go kit in your car, with non-perishable foods, some water and extra spare clothes, and medications, activities for smaller kids, a blanket, first aid, etc. Make sure there is a way for emergency patrons to see how many kids and adults are in the home, in case of unconsciousness.

Preparing your pets for a fire

Keeping all pet information up to date, and having pets microchipped in case of separation due to any form of natural disaster. Add a secondary contact that is not in your immediate area in the manner that you’re surrounding area becomes inaccessible for any reason, add secondary contact to pets’ collar and name tag. Always have an emergency pet kit with your emergency kit. This can be a part of your “go kit” including non-perishable pet food, and treats, an extra leash, pet medications if any, pet first-aid, etc. If your unable to go home immediately, have a plan for your pet due to not all places are pet-friendly. Make sure there is a sticker or sign for emergency patrons can see that there are pets in the home and if you can how many, an ideal place for this can be a window.

Fire & Smoke Restoration

When it comes to Fire and smoke damage for homes and businesses, SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio's technicians are experts in both eliminating the fire effects and the ancillary damages. Fires require our professional to remove smoke from the vents, odor from the air, and soot from the walls.

Most of the time a fire damage situation is localized to a certain section of the home, but because many buildings have air ducts and ventilation systems that run throughout the property, the smoke and soot from a fire event can travel anywhere. When soot and smoke invades the air ducts, even a fire localized to one room can coat the entire home with a layer of potentially harmful dust.

Home Fire Drill Day

Teach Children About Fire Safety

Only 1 in 5 parents regularly practice fire escape plans at home, and only half of the parents report that their children know what to do in the event of a fire. Yet, home fires are the biggest disaster threat facing American families today, with 9 in 10 structure fires occurring in the home.

To raise awareness of this issue and encourage families to be more prepared when it comes to fire safety, firefighters have partnered with Nationwide’s Make Safe Happen program to launch a new national observance day – Home Fire Drill Day. Home Fire Drill Day will occur on the last day of the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Fire Prevention Week (October 6-12th).

Home Fire Drill Day tips include:

  • Prepare for the practice by drawing out a plan based on the exits around the home.
  • Pick a family safety spot that’s near your home and a safe distance away.
  • Test your smoke alarms with your kids so they know what the beep sounds like.
  • For children under six, assign an adult to help them.
  • Use a timer to ensure everyone is at the safety spot in two minutes or less, this is how much time a family has to safely exit the house in the event of a fire.

When a fire happens at home, children can become frightened and hide. By educating children at home, we can save lives -- and even have a little fun while doing it!

Visit http://homefiredrillday.makesafehappen.com/ for activities and games you can play on Home Fire Drill Day.

Letting Smoke Go Untreated

3/4/2019 (Permalink)

Fire Damaged Kitchen after small grease fire

Fire and smoke damage can wreak havoc to your personal property and structures. A quick reaction can help you minimize the impact of the destruction as some of your household goods can be cleaned and salvaged if treated immediately. You should, therefore, hasten the process of hiring a professional to help you manage the damage in a correct manner. Conversely, if left untreated, smoke and fire damage can be more devastating in the following ways:

The Restoration Cost Increase

When the treatment process is extended, the damages begin to get worse and more difficult to deal with. If smoke goes untreated for long, the odors become more persistent and more difficult to neutralize. These challenges make the treatment process harder and more time consuming and ultimately more expensive.

Extensive Damage

Smoke and ash can mix with water to produce a very corrosive element. If not cleaned quickly, this corrosive substance begins to slowly corrode away walls, floors, ceilings and any other surfaces in your home. Cleaning up quickly with soap and water is not enough. The substance requires proper cleaning with appropriate chemicals to remove it completely in order to contain the damages.

Soot Deposits

Neutralizing of soot residual and deposits is an effective first clean up step. If left for long, soot can easily travel and penetrate into other rooms that weren't affected by the fire, staining the wall paint, carpet, furniture, drapes, clothing and any other household items.

Permanent Damage

Your property can suffer permanent damage if not treated in a timely manner. Damage begins to set in within hours and prolonged exposure may cause permanent harm to your walls which turns yellow, metal surfaces begins to corrode, clothes stain permanently and wooden furniture which may need refinishing. It also damages the floor which may need replacement.

Following a fire, it is necessary to seek smoke treatment immediately to save yourself from the effects of prolonged exposure to smoke and to make it easier for you to restore your home. In case you suspect some smoke damage in your residence and need smoke cleanup, water damage clean-up or storm damage contact SERVPRO North Central San Antonio at (210) 899-1017 or www.SERVPROnorthcentralsanantonio.com

Smoke & Soot

Smoke & Soot Damage from Fire

Prevent Your Child from Starting Fires

3/1/2018 (Permalink)

The aftermath of a house fire accidentally by child playing with matches.

The U.S. Fire Administration estimates that 300 people are killed and $280 million in property is destroyed each year as the result of children playing with fire.

As you can see in this picture this was an extensive fire. This fire was due to a child playing with matches. The fire originally started in the bedroom when is spread quickly throughout the home. Thankfully everyone got out safe and the fire department was able to put out the flames.

Tragically, many home fires are started by children playing with dangerous household items – especially lighters and matches. Taking sensible precautions in the home and teaching your child how to escape from a fire can help your family avoid this type of heartbreak.

Prevent Your Child from Starting Fires

Keep matches, lighters and other ignitable substances in a secured location out of your child’s reach. Only use lighters with child-resistant features.

Invest in flameless candles. These candles contain a light bulb rather than an open flame, and take the danger out of your child knocking over a candle.

Help Your Child Survive a Fire

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Once a month check whether each alarm in the home is working properly by pushing the test button. Replace batteries in smoke alarms at least once a year. Immediately install a new battery if an alarm chirps, warning the battery is low.
  •  Teach your children what smoke alarms sound like and what to do when they hear one.
  •  Ensure that all household members know two ways to escape from every room of your home, and where to meet up outside.
  •  Practice your fire escape plan at least twice a year and at different times of the day. Practice waking up to smoke alarms, low crawling and meeting outside. Make sure everyone knows how to call 9-1-1.
  •  Emphasize “get out, stay out.” Only professional firefighters should enter a building that is on fire—even if other family members, pets or prized possessions are inside.
  • Use quick-release devices on barred windows and doors. Security bars without release devices can trap you in a deadly fire. If you have security bars on your windows, be sure one window in each sleeping room has a release device.
  • Consider getting escape ladders for sleeping areas on the second or third floor. Learn how to use them, and store them near the windows.
  • Teach household members to STOP, DROP and ROLL if their clothes should catch on fire.

Protein Fire in San Antonio Kitchen

7/31/2017 (Permalink)

When dealing with a fire in your home, more than likely you will notice there is visible smoke residue and large amounts of soot. When dealing with a protein fire, it is the opposite. There is little to no visible smoke residuebut a strong pungent odor is present. A protein fire usually occurs in the kitchen and the low level of heat reduces the animal fat and food protein to a mist that leaves an almost invisible residue. This can be an extensive problem because an untrained eye will see no black soot and will underestimate the damage that has occurred on their property. With a protein fire, there is an absence of smoke that is visible and when paired with a pungent odor, can be frustrating to any home or business holder. In most cases, both structural components and contents are compromised in this situation.

During a protein fire, the burned material is consumed in a slow manner, making it easy for the residue to penetrate the interior of cabinets, closets, and even air ducts. This type of fire can also cause a discoloration on painted surface that will have a beige or pink tint which could be permanent. If cleaning does not do the trick, then re-painting may be the best option for the homeowner in that instance. Any carpeting, clothing, and upholstery that are affected will also need to be cleaned meticulously to ensure that the odor generating residue is removed. In most cases, textiles usually release the odors greater than hard kitchen surfaces such as tiling.

Many odor sources are overlooked by the untrained eye, as they do not know what to look for in the case of a fire disaster that leaves no visible residue. Usually, these odors are found near the source; in kitchens, dining rooms, and adjacent rooms to where the fire has occurred.

SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio will follow a strategy and many steps until the problem is fixed and solved. All home and business owners should know that residue left from a protein fire is more damage, and more persistent, then its appearance lets on.

Fire Damage in San Antonio, Texas

7/31/2017 (Permalink)

A fire is one of the most destructive disasters that can break out in your home or workplace. It threatens human life and destroys most of the things that get caught in its wake. As a fire rages, it also produces thick plumes of smoke that carry soot and caustic chemicals that deal additional damage to everything touched. This damage happens gradually and can persist long after the fire has been put out.

Smoke leaves behind a burnt odor that is hard to get rid of even after cleaning your place and using deodorizers. Making things worse is the fact that smoke’s caustic residue eats away at wood, paint and plastics. Over time, acidic reactions weaken and discolor these materials and damage both your infrastructure and its contents. Metals aren't safe from smoke damage, either. The same caustic substances can cause rapid corrosion and the breakdown of electronic equipment.

Don’t let a fire do extra damage long after its final embers have been doused. Call SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio, we have dealt with every mess imaginable that fire has left behind. We use the most advanced equipment and up-to-date cleaning processes to track down and get rid of every last bit of residue that fire and smoke left behind. Our team of cleaning experts is trained to handle post-fire situations safely and effectively to get the job done in as little time as possible.

EMERGENCY FIRE DAMAGE TIPS

These emergency tips will assist you in taking proper action until we arrive. Follow these DOs and DON’Ts to help reduce damage and increase the chances of a successful restoration.

DO:

    • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into carpet and avoid tracking.

    • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls, and woodwork.

    • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor.

    • Wipe soot from metal kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim, and appliances.

    • If heat is off during winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilet bowls, holding tanks, and tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures.

    • Remove soot particles from plants with a damp cloth.

    • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system.

DON’T:

    • Don’t attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio

    • Don’t attempt to shampoo carpet, rugs, or upholstered furniture without first consulting SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio.

    • Don’t attempt to clean any electrical appliances (TV sets, radios, etc.) that may have been close to fire, heat, or water.

    • Don’t consume any food or beverages that may have been stored close to fire, heat, or water. (They may be contaminated.)

    • Don’t turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. Wiring may be wet or damaged and cause electrical shock, and air movement may create secondary damage.

    • Don’t send garments to the dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set in smoke odor.

Getting Rid of Smoke Odors

3/1/2017 (Permalink)
