Flood Cleanup Requirements

5/10/2022 (Permalink)

Storm Damaged Home Storm Damaged home San Antonio

Dealing with a flooded home in San Antonio, TX means much more than being faced with unwanted water and drying out the house. If the waters were caused by Mother Nature, it may bring contaminates and microorganisms into your home. Anything that water touches requires additional cleaning requirements to ensure it is done right. After calling your insurance company to make a claim, your next call should be to a water damage restoration specialist. They will have the tools and techniques to ensure the flood clean up process is done right.

The Cleaning Process

Once you get the approval of your insurance company, you can begin cleaning and preparing your home for restoration. Below are important steps to take:

  • Document all areas and items that were affected.
  • Remove any mud that has built up.
  • Dispose of wet items that can’t be cleaned. Be sure to take photos of the items.
  • Any clothing, bedding, rugs and other textiles should be washed in hot, soapy water.
  • Dishes, silverware and other kitchen items should be run through the dishwasher or cleaned with antibacterial soap.
  • Use a special flood disinfectant on every surface that has been exposed to floodwaters.
  • Move wet furniture and similar items that can be salvaged to a dry, secure location.

Safety First
When it comes to cleaning requirements for flooding, safety should also be the top priority. Depending on the severity of the damage, it may mean wading through contaminated waters or dealing with a significant amount of leftover debris. Proper PPE should be worn when working in a flooded area. That should include long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, goggles, face mask, disposable gloves and disposable booties. A flood can leave a big mess that means extra cleaning requirements. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, trust a professional that is Faster to Any Size Disaster to ensure the cleanup is done fast and the right way.

Dealing With Water Damage

5/10/2022 (Permalink)

Categories of Water Damage There are three different categories of water.

Dealing with damage due to flooding in San Antonio and surrounding areas can be a devastating affair. If you don’t take the right steps to dry out your home and remove all the water, you could be dealing with the results for years to come. Whether the water damage is from a leaky pipe, rainstorm or flood, you want to restore your home as soon as possible.

Types of Water

There are three different categories of water:

  • Category 1 (clean water),
  • Category 2 (gray water) and
  • Category 3 (black water).

Category 1 is clean water. Clean water sources could include water pipes, steam lines, water heaters and sometimes rainwater. If it is category 1, it will look and smell like tap water.

Categories 2 and 3, gray water and black water, present risks. It is important to understand the difference between the two. If your home has contamination from flood waters or sewage backup, a more extensive cleanup will be required.

Storm Rolling In When storms hit your home in Texas, call SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio at: 210-899-1017

Reach out to SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio Technicians for Professional Storm Damage Restoration in your Home.

During a storm, heavy rains may lead to flooding, and powerful winds can ruin your San Antonio home's roof or other parts. Some post-storm damage can also create health and safety hazards. Once you notice flooding in your home, act immediately by contacting professionals to prevent further damage.

Why should I contact professionals?

Water is pervasive, progressive, and can cause irreversible damage to costly building materials and possessions. You can prevent this by handling the storm damage in your South Texas residence within the first 48 hours. Our SERVPRO team can take several steps to prevent long-term damage. We have state-of-the-art equipment and products that help us handle storm and flood damage of any magnitude. We have decades of experience and skills that help us provide effective and prompt restoration services.

Is your inspection process thorough?

We inspect the affected property to determine the proper steps needed to restore it to its preloss condition. We use advanced equipment and tools to conduct the assessment.

How do you remove moisture in hard to reach areas?

The drying process is a significant step in restoration. Our technicians can remove the water using portable pumps. We can then use structural cavity drying equipment that helps us to direct airflow into wall cavities, replacing the moist air with warmer, dry air. The machine increases the surface temperature and lowers the vapor pressure, leading to a high evaporation rate. We can direct air into wall cavities, below cabinets, and other structural cavities by drilling small holes in ceilings, walls, or under the cabinets.

Do I have to worry about odors?

If you begin the restoration process quickly, you can minimize the chances of odors persisting in your property. However, if there is an existing odor, we can use various products to combat the smells, including:

  • Odor counteractant beads
  • Thermal foggers
  • Hydroxyl machines

After a storm strikes, dealing with the aftermath can seem overwhelming. SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio can take the right steps to stabilize and restore your home back to normal. Call us today at 210-899-1017

Tornadoes

4/7/2022 (Permalink)

Tornado When severe weather hits your home or place of business call your experts at SERVPRO North Central San Antonio at (210) 899-1017

With these storms we've had lately, it's always good to know what to do in case there is a tornado around you.

Below are 4 tips on what to do if there is a Tornado warning in your area!

1. Figure out a safe place to ride out the storm

Do you live in a mobile home? If so, get somewhere safer. Driving in a car? Get home as quickly as you can, and if that's not possible, get to a sturdy building and take shelter.

2. Get away from windows

Regardless of where you're hunkering down, it should be as far away from windows as possible.

3. If a tornado appears while you're on the road...

You should make every effort to find a safe building for shelter. If you can't find one, NEVER hide under an overpass. Instead, find a ditch, get down and cover your head.

4. Don't leave your home and try to drive away from a tornado

Tornadoes can shift their path, and even if you think you're directly in the line of the storm, being inside shelter is safer than being inside a car.

First, evacuate if you are directed to do so or if you feel it might be unsafe to remain in your home. If you remain in your home, follow these tips to help you and your family stay safe during the storm:

Use a portable radio to listen to important storm updates, information and instructions.
Stay inside and keep away from all windows, skylights and glass doors. Go to a safe area, such as an interior room, closet or downstairs bathroom.
Never go outside the protection of your home or shelter before there is confirmation that the storm has passed the area. The eye of the storm could create a temporary and deceptive lull, with high winds still approaching.
If power is lost, keep the refrigerator closed to keep cold air trapped and delay spoilage of perishable food.
If you use a portable generator, follow all the manufacturer’s instructions. Generators should be properly grounded to prevent electrical shock and should never be operated indoors, in garages, basements or outdoors near any windows, doors or vents. Because generators produce carbon monoxide (CO), make sure you have a working CO detector in your home.

5 Things You Must Do Immediately After Storm Damage

5/13/2021 (Permalink)

Flooded Streets with Cars due to recent Storms When Storms hit San Antonio and Surrounding areas Call us at (210) 899-1017

Storm damage can happen any time of year, (although during the winter, the effects of storm damage can be particularly brutal.) Your home may suffer roof damage that might ruin the structural integrity of your home and cause leaking. Strong winds might cause fragile trees to collapse.

At SERVPRO North Central San Antonio we’re committed to help keeping this community safe.  We understand how challenging it can be to deal with storm damage. As a leader in the restoration industry, we’ve been helping homes and businesses in this area for over 10 years. We have the advanced training and equipment needed to get your life back to normal as quickly as possible.

When you’re dealing with storm damage, it’s important to act quickly to minimize problems. Here are 5 things you should do immediately in the wake of storm damage:

Stay safe!

Winter storms can quickly create hazardous conditions, such as collapsing roofs or damage to your windows and/or walls.  Leaking can cause water damage that can ruin carpeting, furniture, and building materials, leading to an environment full of potential dangers.

While it can be tempting to want to rush in and save what you can – don’t forget that your first priority is to stay safe!

Be sure to shut off the main gas line if you smell gas, and be on the lookout for slippery surfaces, exposed nails, broken glass, and other possible hazards.  I you decide to enter the affected area, you’ll probably want to wear protective clothing and slip-resistant shoes. Depending on the extent of the damage, it may even be necessary to arrange an alternate place to be while your property is being restored.

Call Your Insurance Provider

Contact your insurance provider as soon as you can to notify them of the damage.  Your insurance company will send an adjuster to check on the state of the damage and determine payments for repairs

SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio will work with your insurance provider to help you process the claim, working one on one with them to help alleviate added stress.

Take Photos

If it is safe to move around or near the affected area, try to photograph the damage so that you have an additional record of evidence for your insurance company. This can help make sure you will be fully compensated.

No fancy camera required – taking photos with your cellphone will be just fine.

Check if You Qualify for Federal Disaster Assistance

Depending on the severity of the storm, the federal government may have declared your property to qualify for disaster relief assistance.  You may be eligible for aid or a low-cost loan for restorations

Restore

When a severe storm hits, it’s a good idea to call for professional restoration services as quickly as you can. The longer standing water is left untreated and damage is not addressed, the more restoration work may be needed and the chance of cost increases may occur.

When an Arctic Blast comes to San Antonio.  When the high temperature is called to be in the low 20’s with a low near 15 degrees.  Is your home ready to withstand the blast?

Here is a simple checklist of items you can do to prepare for the cold:

  • Have your HVAC system checked if you have not already done so.  An HVAC system failure in freezing temperatures is not only an uncomfortable inconvenience but could lead to frozen and ruptured pipes.
  • Clean your chimneys to remove soot build up and prevent a possible clog. Smoke blowing back into your home can make a real mess.
  • Test your smoke and CO2 alarms to make sure they are working and have charged batteries.
  • Make sure all outside plumbing including hoses, lawn sprinklers. and pool equipment is off and pipes are drained.

If you experience storm related damage call SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio at (210) 899-1017.

Ways to prepare for a Storm

Storm headed your way? Read these tips to prepare:

  • Always keep a battery-powered radio in your home so that you can tune to radio stations if you lose electricity. Check or change the batteries frequently.

  • Keep a flashlight in an easily accessible spot on every floor of your home. Check the batteries monthly, and replace them as needed.

  • Keep a supply of candles on hand for power failures.

  • As a safety precaution before leaving the house on vacation, unplug all electrical appliances except for those lights connected to automatic timers.

  • If you live in a storm-prone area, nail down roof shingles or use adequate adhesives to keep them from blowing off in a violent wind. For roofs with shingles that are not the seal-down type, apply a little dab of roofing cement under each tab.

  • A lightning-protection system should offer an easy, direct path for the bolt to follow into the ground and thus prevent injury or damage. Grounding rods (at least two for a house) should be placed at opposite corners of the house.

  • Don't go out during a hurricane unless you have to. However, if flooding threatens, seek high ground, and follow the instructions of civil defense personnel.

  • When a major storm is imminent, close shutters, board windows, or tape the inside of larger panes with an "X" along the full length of their diagonals. Even a light material like masking tape may give the glass the extra margin of strength it needs to resist cracking.

Preparing for Winter Weather

4/6/2021 (Permalink)

Frozen plumbing pipe that busted after freeze Pipe that froze, then later thawed out causing pipes to burst.

Winter is the restoration industry's busiest time and busted water pipes are a leading cause. Many times this costly damage could of been prevented with some easy preventive maintenance steps.

1. Pipe wrap to insulate the expose piping in and around the home. This is an inexpensive way to be proactive and to ensure that the exposed pipes will not freeze.

2. Seal/insulate all small cracks and openings in your home. Wires and pipes run inside/out of homes and could leave small open spaces which will permit freezing wind to directly affect an area of pipe. That area could freeze and burst. This again is a simply and cost efficient way to keep the heat inside and the cold out.

3. During those especially freezing nights, let the faucets slowly drip. Running water through the pipes will prevent it from freezing. Also, open cabinet doors under the sinks to allow the home heat to circulate underneath. Again, a few degrees can make a tremendous difference.

SERVPRO is here to serve you for all your smoke fire and water cleanup and restoration needs. We are an emergency services company available 24/7 to help make it "Like it never even happened."

Storm Damage to your San Antonio Home

4/8/2020 (Permalink)

San Antonio City Skyline SERVPRO here for San Antonio

The end of winter and the onset of spring often brings storms in the San Antonio area that leave a lot of precipitation and damage. If your home is subjected to high winds, snow, sleet, and rain, you may have to call the professionals for restoration. Our team at SERVPRO understands how unpredictable the weather can be, which is why we have specialized processes in place to tackle all your flood mitigation needs.

Should you have flood damage in San Antonio, taking quick action to mitigate appropriately is critical. Even though the floodwaters recede, they leave behind sludge filled with bacteria and other contaminants. Known as black water, floodwater must be addressed carefully so that you and your family can get back to life as usual without potential health hazards. With a simple phone call, we deploy a team that comes out to your home, perform an assessment, and put cleanup measures into motion to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Initial Restoration Measures

Any carpeting throughout your home impacted by floodwater is usually discarded if it is unable to be cleaned thoroughly and restored. Our skilled technicians know how to quickly perform pack-out services that help remove electronics, furnishings, and other belongings from areas near moisture. Items must be relocated to dry, safe places so that moisture does not take hold. Any damaged items that can be restored are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized, followed by deodorization. Items that are not salvageable can be replaced.

Controlled Demolition

Our trained technicians go through your home to determine the best places for flood cuts in the drywall. Floodwater gets behind baseboards and starts to wick up the drywall, so cutting away enough drywall several inches above the area of saturation helps to prevent mold infestation. Flood cuts allow SERVPRO technicians to speed up the drying process by setting up air movers to get into the wall cavities. We also use dehumidifiers to help further removal of vapors from the air.

SERVPRO of North Central San Antonio is available whenever you need assistance with flood damage restoration. Give our team a call at (210) 899-1017, and we send out a team to begin the assessment process. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergency service.

Hand turning on TV with remote control Stay in the loop with the weather.

As new weather forecast models and radar systems have been developed in the last several decades; meteorologists are able to more closely watch and predict upcoming weather systems. For the last half-century, or so the vast majority of people got their updates on the weather for the day and week from their local weatherman. Television was king along with a sliver of radio and in some fashion, local print news. With the advent of the internet though many more people now to receive the weather forecast for their local area through digital mediums relying less on television news. Being the cast it is still important for individuals to choose their media outlets wisely before taking what the site presents as conclusive.

Just a few tips to make sure you’re being given the best information weather-wise.

  1. Investigate to learn if the website or app you’re using for local weather updates is actually reviewed by actual people, or is it a computer just generating the report. That can be done by going to the about us or contact us page to learn if the team is located locally, or nationally. If it’s national then the chances are much higher it is generated by a computer and not deeply analyzed by a local news meteorologist for accuracy.
  2. Secondly, while new, innovative technologies have made weather forecasting a much more efficient process it is still not completely accurately especially with long-range forecasts that go out over a week. Typically forecast that goes out that far aren’t as reliable.
  3. Lastly, do a bit of research on weather forecasting of your own. Beforehand without the internet, the need to rely on local meteorologists to explain weather occurrences was much greater due to many people not knowing that much about the weather. Now everyone, for the most part, has access to this information.

Flooding in Commercial Warehouse

Spring is finally here!! Flowers are blooming, but with that, it also means it’s the start of the rainy season. While the spring can bring welcome relief after the long winter months, flooding can be a real concern for homeowners. You don’t need to live in a flood zone to fall victim to flooding. It’s best for everyone to be prepared in case the worst happens.

Changes in the area could create flood zones in areas that were deemed safe in the past and major weather storms could cause severe flooding that extends into zones that aren’t used to experiencing the flooding.

All homeowners should take the time to make sure they’re prepared. It’s important for them to make sure they understand what can be done to prevent serious flood damage inside homes and to protect their belongings from these issues. Storm Damage Process

Flood Cut @ Storm Damaged Home in McAllen

Violent weather such as storm damage can wreak havoc on buildings as well as vegetation. Wind damage can be a hazard to the structure of a building, by loosening the shingles or tiles on the roof. This can cause moisture such as rain and snow to infiltrate into the protective surface of the roof, which will result in the wood swelling and later on disintegration and becoming moldy. This outcome will lead to a sagging ceiling and further problems. Elements such as wind, rain, hail, and lightning can result in turning people’s lives upside down, this is why having a storm damage restoration service to help this type of emergency is a good option.

Here are some of the activities you can expect from the storm restoration service professionals.

  • Whether it is a business or residence, the restoration company will come to your property and their trained experts will do a thorough examination of the interior and exterior of your building. This will help them discover the level of damage. In many cases, the restoration company will discuss the renovation plans with you and your insurance adjuster.
  • When everything is agreed upon, the work begins. Depending on what type of damage is present, this will determine the type of equipment the professional will use. In the case of flooding, they will use specialized pumps and vacuums to remove water from the affected areas.
  • Generators will be brought in to operate their dehumidifiers and air movers so mold and mildew do not have a chance to make matters worse. Using customized cleaners, the specialist will then disinfect hard surfaces and shampoo salvageable carpets as well as apply deodorant to combat any odors.

What to look for after a Hail Storm

3/16/2018 (Permalink)

Hail Storm San Antonio

Do you have hail damage?  It is not that easy a question to answer. If your building has asphalt shingles or a metal roof, you may see dents. But, on a built-up (tar & gravel) roof, you might see few to no visible signs of damage.

When do you need professional help? Three Helpful Indicators:

Hail comes in many sizes and densities, so it can be difficult to know when you actually need to be concerned about damage. Whether you’re staring at pea-sized hail on the ground or golf-ball size hail, here are some signs that indicate it would be a good idea to at least talk to a professional:

  • Damaged vehicles—If the roofs of nearby cars were dented, then there’s a good chance your building also sustained hail damage.
  • Damaged siding, downspouts or windows—If you are unable to safely inspect your roof, hail damage to other parts of your building, such as dented downspouts or siding, can be a good indicator you may need to take action.
  • Work on neighboring properties—If a neighboring building sustained hail damage and is being repaired, it’s a sign you should more closely inspect your roof and building.

FLOOD FACTS for SAN ANTONIO

7/31/2017 (Permalink)

Floods are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. FEMA reports, in the last 8 years, all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods. As most of us have recently experienced, nearly 20% of all flood insurance claims come from moderate-to-low risk areas.

Here are a few Flood Facts provided by FEMA:

  • Flash floods can bring walls of water from 10 to 20 feet high.
  • Flooding can be caused by spring thawing (snow and frozen grounds melting in the spring), heavy rains, snow melt runoffs, flash floods, and mudflows.
  • Floods are the most widespread natural disaster aside from wildfires.
  • A 2,000-square foot home undergoing 12 feet of water damage could cost more than $50,000 to repair.

Here are a few supplies you need to prepare for a flood:

  • Stock up on First Aid items
  • Non-perishable foods
  • Three gallons of water per person for 3 days
  • Battery operated radio for weather reports
  • Extra batteries
  • Personal hygiene necessities

Are you Prepared in San Antonio?

Are You Ready for High Winds or Tornadoes in San Antonio?

Would you know how to protect yourself and others from destructive high winds of a tornado?

Know the Terms.

A tornado watch means that conditions exist for a tornado to develop. Prepare to move to shelter in the lowest level of a sturdy building. Listen to a local television or radio station for up-to-date weather information, including the development of tornado warnings.

A tornado warning means a tornado or funnel cloud has been spotted or is about to happen in or near your area. Take immediate action to seek safe shelter. Continue to listen to local television or radio station for up-to-date weather information. Stay sheltered until the tornado warning has expired for your area.

Prepare a home tornado plan. Pick an uncluttered place in your home that is on the lowest level with no windows. The safest place is in the basement under a staircase. In the event of a tornado warning in your area, your family should know where to go in order to stay safe. If you are outside or in a mobile home, find immediate shelter in a nearby sturdy building.

Make a ready kit. Include a flashlight, portable radio, extra batteries, first aid kit, bottled water, nonperishable food, manual can opener, blankets or sleeping bags, and protective clothing.

Protect your home against high winds. Remove diseased or damaged limbs from trees. Move or secure lawn furniture, trash cans and anything else that could become a missile-like object if picked up by strong winds of a tornado.

Consult with professionals about a "safe room". If you are building a new home or remodeling, ask about having a structurally reinforced space constructed for your family’s protection during a tornado or high winds.

Flood Safety Awareness Week

     Flood Safety Awareness Week

Are you prepared for flooding to happen near your San Antonio home or office?  Would you know what to do or who to call?  Do you have flood insurance coverage?  These are all things to consider before its to late.

March 13-19 is Flood Safety Awareness Week. According to the National Weather Service, "Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other severe weather related hazard. The main reason is people underestimate the force and power of water. More than half of all flood related deaths result from vehicles being swept downstream. Of these, many are preventable." As flood season approaches, now is a great time to review such topics as the dangers of flooding, driving through water, and flood insurance.
